This is how a sunspot really looks, in the most detailed picture of the surface of the sun yet. Hola, Senor Sauron!The photo, which was taken on July 2 by New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Professor Philip R. Good and the Big Bear Solar Observatory team, shows a sun spot at about 3600C, surrounded by a mosaic of hell burning at 5800C. The BBSO is 1.6m in diameter and will be able to resolve sun details as small as 45km in optimal conditions. The image itself shows details measuring 0.09 arcseconds, which is about 65km.
